Endodontic Surgery – Apicoectomy
Why would I need Endodontic Surgery?
If endodontic disease persists after conventional endodontic treatment, the endodontist may advise endodontic surgery. This procedure can be used to manage otherwise inaccessible source of disease, identify cracks or fractures or canal anatomy that does not appear on imaging. The most common surgery is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.
What is an Apicoectomy?
The video on the right illustrates the procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The diseased tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A root-end filling may be placed to prevent reinfection of the root canal and the gum is then sutured back into place. The bone naturally repairs around the root over a period of time.
Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort and swelling for up to a week while the incisions heal. To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have concerns during the healing phase please call our office at Edmonton Office Phone Number 780-425-8930.
